Basic Premise

Star Trek: The Next Generation ran for seven years on US television, from 1987 to 1994. 178 television hours were produced by Paramount Pictures, and the show was syndicated across the United States and around the world. The show was nominated for Best Drama Series at the 1994 Emmy awards. The program was produced following the success of the previous Star Trek series, which ran on the US network from 1966 to 1969. The Next Generation is set in the years 2364-2370, more than ninety years after the original series. This gave the producers, headed by Original Series creator Gene Roddenberry, a whole new ship, cast, and universe to create. The action takes place aboard a new U.S.S. Enterprise, the NCC 1701-D, in a universe where warp drive is faster, the Klingons are at peace with the Federation, and computing and other technologies have advanced remarkably. Following the end of the TV series, the movie Star Trek: Generations was released. Paramount plans to release a new Next Generation movie every 18-24 months, and Star Trek: First Contact, was released in the US in late November 1996. Given the commercial success of First Contact ($US 60 million in its first two weeks in the US), which mixed Borg battles and time travel, another movie seems certain.
