Guest Stars confirmed for Christmas Doctor Who

The BBC has confirmed veteran actor Michael Gambon and opera diva Katherine Jenkins will guest star in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special.

Production starts today and will continue until August.

Michael Gambon is one of the UK's most respected actors, best known for his role as Philip Marlow in BBC television serial The Singing Detective and for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series.

Katherine Jenkins is a Welsh mezzo-soprano who has sold more than 4 million copies of her studio albums. This will be her first acting role. Arriving on set for her first day of filming, Katherine Jenkins said

I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special – I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!

Steven Moffat, Lead writer and Executive Producer on the series commented:
Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters and the Doctor and a honeymoon and – oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically.

Doctor Who Prom - Broadcast Details

The BBC have released details of the BBC Radio Three broadcast of the Doctor Who Prom taking place on Saturday 24 July.

The Prom will be broadcast live on the station from 7.30pm - 9.45pm UK Time, and will be available worldwide on the BBC iPlayer.

The Doctor is back. Two years ago, he appeared at the BBC Proms via video link. This year, he's here in person. Thrills, spills, adventures, monsters and special guests are all guaranteed along the way in this Proms spectacular. Petroc Trelawny has the unenviable task of keeping everything in order for BBC Radio 3 – though, sadly, without the help of a sonic screwdriver.

Doctor Who (Matt Smith) and his assistant, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), join the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the London Philharmonic Choir for an action-packed evening. Monsters from the current run of the hugely successful BBC series threaten to disrupt proceedings. Only the Doctor – ably assisted by conductors Ben Foster and Grant Llewellyn – can save the day.

There are some classical favourites with a suitably celestial theme, including Mars from Holst's Planets Suite and John Adams's thrilling Short Ride In A Fast Machine.

We understand the following tracks from Doctor Who Composer Murray Gold, will be included in the programme.

The Madman with a Box (Prologue); An Untimely Arrival; I am the Doctor; Battle in the Skies; Amy; Liz, Lizards, Vampires and Vincent; This is Gallifrey / Vale Decem; Pandorica Suite; Song of Freedom; Doctor Who Theme.

The twenty minute interval will be filled on Radio Three with a documentary looking at the weird and wonderful sound world of Doctor Who's incidental music, Dance Of The Daleks.

Doctor Who Prom on BBC Three

The Radio Times is listing the 2010 Doctor Who Prom for transmission on BBC Three on Monday 6th September at 8.30pm.

The broadcast will follow a repeat of the most recent series finale The Big Bang.

The Prom is being broadcast in a one hour slot implying the programme will be edited, probably removing the non Doctor Who music. The Prom took place on Saturday 24th July when it was broacast on BBC Radio Three. It was hosted by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

Doctor Who games for Nintendo

Back in March there was a report that Nintendo had signed a £10m deal with BBC Worldwide to produce games based on Doctor Who. Various online shops have now listed two games to be released: on the DS platform comes Doctor Who: Evacuation Earth, whilst the Wii platform will see Doctor Who: Return to Earth; it is uncertain when these scheduled to be released (Amazon lists them for the 29th October, Play for the 19th November).

The game has also been classified by the Australian Government for release in the country.

No other details on the games are known at present.

Doctor Who - The Adventure Games - TARDIS

The third instalment of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games will be available from 27th August.

The game will be based around the TARDIS with players exploring the famous blue box and visiting rooms created specially for the game, such as the Doctor's drawing room, full of treasures from his many adventures.

Since 1963, kids have wondered what it would be like to control the TARDIS. Now we're handing complete control of the most powerful ship in all of space and time to a generation of children. The game features the voices of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan and is executive produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Anwen Aspden from BBC Wales Interactive, alongside Charles Cecil. Music is by Murray Gold and TARDIS is written by James Moran, who wrote the Tenth Doctor story The Fires of Pompeii.

UK players will be able to download the game free of charge from the BBC official site. Users outside the UK will be able to purchase and download the game from Direct2Drive.

Next Series to be transmitted in two halves

Sunday, August 29, 2010 - Posted by Kenny Davidson Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Steven Moffat has announced that the next series of Doctor Who will be split in two with a 'gamechanging' cliffhanger in episode 7.

"The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

The BBC press office describe the split transmission as the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. "By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens."
