Cabler acquires rights to Martin's 'Ice'

HBO has acquired the rights to turn George R.R. Martin's bestselling fantasy series "A Song of Fire & Ice" into a dramatic series to be written and exec produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
"Fire" is the first TV project for Benioff ("Troy") and Weiss ("Halo") and will shoot in Europe or New Zealand. Benioff and Weiss will write every episode of each season together save one, which the author (a former TV writer) will script.
The series will begin with the 1996 first book, "A Game of Thrones," and the intention is for each novel (they average 1,000 pages each) to fuel a season's worth of episodes. Martin has nearly finished the fifth installment, but won't complete the seven-book cycle until 2011.
The author will co-exec produce the series along with Management 360's Guymon Casady and Created By's Vince Gerardis.
Martin's series has drawn comparisons to J.R.R. Tolkien, because both are period epics set in imagined lands. But Martin has eschewed Tolkien's good-vs.-evil theme in favor of flawed characters from seven noble families.
The book has a decidedly adult bent, with sex and violence comparable to series like "Rome" and "Deadwood."
"They tried for 50 years to make 'Lord of the Rings' as one movie before Peter Jackson found success making three," Martin said. "My books are bigger and more complicated, and would require 18 movies. Otherwise, you'd have to choose one or two characters."
Aside from writing the most recent draft of "Halo," Weiss recently adapted the William Gibson novel "Pattern Recognition" for WB and director Peter Weir.
Benioff and Weiss were repped by CAA and Management 360.

Goed dat de schrijver ook medeproduceert, zo blijft de sfeer van het boek goed in de film.

Het project hangt nog steeds in een limbo.
I have some exciting news to share.
(But please, guys and gals, don't get TOO excited. This is what it is, and so far that's all it is, so don't make any assumptions).
HBO has just exercised its option, and purchased the television rights to A GAME OF THRONES.
For those of you who don't know Hollywood, an option gives a production company the right to buy a property (a book, a screenplay, whatever) at a certain agreed-upon price for a certain period of time (a year, six months, whatever). When that time runs out, they can let the option lapse, renew the option, or exercise the option and buy the property. The last is what HBO has just done.
What they have NOT done is greenlight the project. A GAME OF THRONES remains in development. They're still budgeting, still looking at locations (Spain and the Czech Republic at present, I hear). No decision has been reached, so any celebration would be premature. In Hollywood it is always best not to assume something is going to happen until it actually happens.
Even so... this is a very encouraging sign, and one that suggests a continued high level of enthusiasm and commitment for A GAME OF THRONES at HBO.
So keep your fingers crossed.

boeken zijn aanraders
blijf ze wel in 1 taal (Engels of Nederlands) lezen.
Anders verandert er teveel. Maar als je nu begint, kan je alles in NL lezen (of ENG uiteraard
)

...begin er pas aan als ie klaar is met de serie. Ik heb zelf echt heel sterk eht idee dat ie zichzelf vast geschreven heeft. Eerste boeken zijn erg goed, het laatste diel viel enorm tegen...

Laatste deel was heeeel duidelijk een tussendeel. Erg irritant. Maar hij heeft dus zo goed als 2 boeken tegelijk geschreven en zn uitgever wilde liever 2 losse boeken printen dan 1 groot samenhangend boek.

najah het komt de serie, die tot dat punt inderdaad boven gemiddeld goed was voor een fantasy serie, niet ten goede.

najah en dat schijnt dus, als ik * moet geloven, niet zo op te schieten...dat is waarom ik zei dat hij zichzelf volgens mij nogal vast geschreven heeft in een te ingewikkeld verhaal

dat kan, want het werkte idd wel naar de climax toe, waarin het "hete zuiden met de draken" kennis zou maken met het "koude noorden van de "ijszombies". En het duurt idd al erg lang...

als je er nu dus aan zou moeten beginnen kan je beter eerst andere dingen lezen en dan nog eens zien of ie het ooit afgemaakt heeft op een goede manier

Kunnen we hier de spoilers over de boeken tot een minimum bewaren, dan wordt er maar een ander topic geopend. Ben zelf pas bij Boek 3, dus spoilers negeer ik liever.
Dit topic gaat over de serie en de productie ervan.

ik zeg toch verder niets inhoudelijks...zeg alleen dat het me tegenviel...niemand heeft het nog over de inhoud gehad, behalve hele grote lijnen die je na de eerste 10 bladzijden van boek 1 al wel had kunnen zien aankomen.

...jah hij werkt naar een climax toe en als ie het niet origineel aanpakt weet je in boek 3 ondertussen ook wel wat hij wil...maar het kan nog helemaal goed komen...hij doet niet voor niets erg lang over het volgende boek

HBO has given the production order.
They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.
It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.
It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.
More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.
Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.
