Tja, wat is de beste Top Gear special? Daar zullen de meningen altijd wel over blijven verschillen. Ik vind zelf die door Zuid-Amerika het beste. Maar daar moet ik bij aantekenen dat onze zoon door dat zelfde gebied heeft gezworven en onder andere op dezelfde plaatsen is geweest.

Zuid Amerika en Vietnam scoren bij mij hoog.

Poolexpeditie en VS wat minder (VS omdat het zo gruwelijk Brits bevooroordeeld was...en jah ik weet dat ik naar een Brits programma kijk, maar toch)

Vietnam is inderdaad ook erg goed. Zuid-Afrika staat bij mij ook hoog. Maar ja, daar heeft die jongen ook een maand rondgezworven (ben eigenlijk best wel jaloers).

De VS sprak mij niet zo aan. Daar kwam het Britse vooroordeel en chauvinisme wel erg sterk tot uiting.

over het leven en de dood van de legendarische Lee Atwater. Atwater hielp, met zijn overtuiging dat politiek oorlog was, drie republikeinse presidenten in het zadel. 'He taught the democrats to sing the blues', zei George H.W. Bush ooit over Atwater. De blues spelende Atwater schuwde in zijn campagne voor de presidentskandidaat geen enkel middel, maar toen hij ziek werd, vroeg hij op zijn doodsbed wel om vergeving. Een portret van een man die opgroeide in de straten van Zuid-Carolina en zich een plaats bevocht in het centrum van de macht, en die niets liever deed dan de blues spelen op zijn gitaar en tegelijkertijd lastercampagnes niet schuwde om de democratische presidentskandidaat in diskrediet te brengen, zoals Atwater in 1988 deed met Michael Dukakis. In archiefmateriaal wordt getoond hoe Atwater met George W. Bush junior campagne voert voor de verkiezing van Bush senior. Toen Atwater echter ongeneeslijk ziek werd, wilde Bush junior niets meer van hem weten. Boogie man: the Lee Atwater story laat zien hoe de hedendaagse politiek is verworden tot een spel van adviseurs en vuile spelletjes. De vraag is: wie wordt de Lee Awater van de toekomst?

17th Precinct

17th PRECINCT: Stockard Channing To Star in Ron Moore’s Supernatural Cop Drama

Stockard Channing (A Fonder Heart, The West Wing) will star in the NBC pilot for Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct. The show is described as “an ensemble cop drama” “set in a fictional town of Excelsior where magic and with supernatural elements rule over science.”

Yes, this is the same series that was described early on as an adult Harry Potter-esque show though 17th Precinct will not have anything to do with the J.K. Rowling universe aside from sharing the existence of magic.

Channing scored the role of Mira, “a fiercely intelligent former homicide detective who’s working in the robbery division of the 17th Precinct.” 17th Precinct is a Sony TV project and is in production in Vancouver.

Hollywood Insider : Plot of the Pilot episode of Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct

jamiebamberIf the news that Battlestar Galactica trio Jamie Bamber, James Callis and Tricia Helfer would be reuniting for 17th Precinct wasn’t exciting enough in itself, get this - - Bamber and Callis will be playing partners on the new show!

Yup, Apollo and Baltar… on the beat.

Firstly, the show is set in a futuristic San Francisco or rather, Excelsior- the Golden Gate Bridge is still there, albeit without the cables, and Alcatraz Island’s still there - just without the prison.

Imagine Hogwarts has swallowed the world whole - - doorbells are no longer doorbells, cars no longer need steering wheels (because they steer themselves), the internet’s been replaced with something even speedier and more easily accessible (is that possible?).

The show is your crime-of-the-week type series (Bones, Criminal Minds) but the very cool future aspect of the series, not to mention the superbly written characters, makes it so much more… if you get my drift.

Like Galactica, Moore also raises some very interesting science vs. supernatural arguments - the pilot ends on a real table talker.

Southland by way of X-Men, the show fixes on the law-enforcers stationed at the 17th Precinct, San Francisco. There’s partners Caolon and Jeff; brilliant vet Mira; newly transsexual detective inspector Liam; rookie Jimmy; and Chief Inspector Walter.

The show’s pilot sees the precinct investigating a murder (and a potentially haunted house, but the murder is given more emphasis).

Caolon (pronounced ‘Kay-Lawn’) Longstreet, played by Bamber, is a blonde thirty-something copper who project a seriousness and deep focus. His partner Jeff Bosson, played by Callis, is a Brit; unlike Caolon he’s a bit more down-to-earth and not exactly fit.

When we’re first introduced to the two they’re ripping through city streets - - Caolon crazily trying to get to a crime scene.

On the way, we learn that Caolon’s trying to get a promotion (he’s studying for a test that will enable him to get it); it’s something he - and his wife, Susan - so want.. .need. You see Caolon’s having a hard time supporting his family - he’s got two kids, two mortgages and two retirement accounts to take care of, and he and his wife’s pachecks (she runs an antique store) aren’t cutting it.

The crime that opens the pilot is a murder. A man in his ’50s is found behind a dumpster. Multiple stab wounds. Seems to have been a struggle. Funnily, nobody heard enough.

It’s immediately evident that these two guys working the case embody supernatural powers - Caolon takes a whole scrapbook of crime scene photos without a camera (he uses his hand to snap pics), whilst Jeff (A straight-up cop character would be a waste of Callis’ talents - - so you’ll be happy to hear that Jeff harbours just as many secrets as Gaius Baltar did (’thou shalt not bang the partner’s wife’) magically lifts the blood from the crime scene and makes it hover just above where it fell.

The dead man is Don Pynchon, a renowned local who possessed the ability to predict future events. Don had seen something that was going to go down on the ‘Equinox’ holiday.

The Deputy Mayor, Brian Kohl - a sleazebag sleeping with another woman - ends up a suspect, after Pynchon’s widow reveals details of a heated telephone conversation her late husband had had with the “government hack”. I’m not going to go revealing who the killers are though… gotta keep something a surprise.

What I will say is that Pynchon’s ghost - summoned up by the ‘magical’ coroner, Morgana (Tricia Helfer) - informs his summoner, and the officers, that his murder was out of “vengeance” not “revenge”.

Interestingly enough, the late Pynchon - the town’s resident predictor of future events - didn’t see his own death coming (Cue another Science vs. Supernatural argument)

Oh, and there’s Chief Inspector Wilder Blanks (Eamonn Walker) - he’s more old-school than all of them, and wrestles quite a bit - with, er, one particular female character in the sack - with how the way crimes are solved and criminals are convicted in this urban of enchantment.

Detective Sargent Mira Barkley (Stockard Channing)’s - hailing from Homicide - recently returned to Excelsior.

Detective Inspector Liam - formerly ‘Lisa’ (yes, you heard right) - Butterfield is surprised to see Mira. Seems Liam and Mira have a history - or rather, Lisa and Mira had a history. Whatever the case, he’s now her boss.

Jimmy (Matt Long), a wet-behind-the-ears rookie, is partnered with the wiser, older Mira Barkley. They’re an odd match.

Liam asks Mira and Jimmy to check out a house that’s been reported as potentially cursed (probably “just a hex” says Liam).

Anyway, both cases tie into each other.

A very intriguing pilot script… this could be something very special. It’s, like Galactica, the characters that stand out the most but for me, I really enjoyed how meticulously detailed this ‘future’ San Francisco is - that element, for lack of a more fitting phrase, is ‘just so cool’.

David Tennant stars in United

The BBC has released more information about the new BBC Two drama starring David Tennant as coach Jimmy Murphy.

United is based on the true story of Manchester United's legendary "Busby Babes", the youngest side ever to win the Football League; the 1958 Munich Air Crash that claimed eight of their number; and the extraordinary spirit of a city that rebuilt the team in the wake of the disaster. The Munich Air Crash killed 23 of the 43 passengers on board, including supporters, journalists and embassy staff.

The drama was shot between November and December 2010 in and around the north of England and was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by James Strong, both of whom have previously worked on Torchwood and Doctor Who.

Tennant was asked in an interview with BBC; "What attracted you to United?"

I've worked with James Strong and Chris Chibnall several times before and James sent me the script. I knew it would be worth reading because it came from him. I'm not a football expert but I was completely bowled over by the incredible story and journey that Manchester United went on. I thought that if it had grabbed and moved me as much as that, then clearly the story must be universal, worth telling and something I wanted to be part of.
