Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean skips December 2012 from People app
OpenIemand schreef:Google's latest Android mobile OS, v4.2 Jelly Bean is suffering from a flaw that has caused the month of December vanishing from its 'People' app, widely used to store information about contacts. The People app shows January 2013 straight after November 2012.
The other Google Calendars, however, haven't been unaffected by the glitch. Google recently launched Android version 4.2 OS, which is currently available on select devices such as Nexus 4 and Nexus 10. The glitch in the OS was first spotted by Android Police.
"Christmas is ruined. Santa is dead. At least we'll save money on buying presents, right?" writes Android Police's Artem Russakovskii.
"If you're an early adopter you're affected by it, but they will rush out an update very quickly," says Pocket-Lint's Stuart Miles in his report titled Google steals December in Android 4.2. "It's quite a small bug. It's the equivalent of spelling something wrong on the front page of a newspaper - it's embarrassing and frustrating but ultimately it's not going to end the world."
According to Pocket-Lint, Google has acknowledged the problem and is working on a fix. We suspect that fix, pushing the OS to Android 4.2.1, will be out shortly.

Two weeks ago, though, it became apparent that WhatsApp had changed their server-side processing. Web clients that used the WhatsAPI library were unable to operate with the service. This led people to assume that WhatsApp had made the system safe, but as the company was not providing any information on its changes it appeared to be relying on security through obscurity.
That obscurity has not lasted long though. A reader of heise Security sent them a script which restored the WhatsAPI library to operation and again allowed them to hijack the account of an Android user of WhatsApp with only the phone number and IMEI code.
[...]
Given how opaquely WhatsApp handles security issues, The H cannot recommend use of the service. We suggest readers use some other application like Skype, Facebook, or even email or SMS where at least the risks are well known and documented, so that they can at least take control of the risks they are being exposed to.

What’s Up With Whatsapp? Facebook Might Want To Buy It, That’s What
Whatsapp, the multiplatform mobile messaging app that has been one of the runaway success stories for ad-free, paid services, has been in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to sources close to the matter.
Qua privacy ga je er dan in ieder geval niet op achteruit

It appears Apple’s launch of iTunes music and movies in Russia is running into a bit of controversy with several Russian users noticing advertising for pornography websites and escort services in the iTunes’ movies section. As highlighted in the many tweets below, and reported by local blog iPhones.ru, a section titled “more films in different languages” is displaying the pornographic content. iPhones.ru speculated it might relate to an issue with temporary xxx placeholder links (machine translation):
Update: most likely, the problem arises because of links: the people responsible for iTunes, put the “temporary” link type xx.xx.xx. That’s just such a site exists, and, as we have seen today, has nothing to do with the ideals of the company.Waiting for the fix.

Max Slater-Robins for Neowin:
So, let me get this straight: Microsoft is being forced to trick the web into thinking its own browser is actually that of its chief rival so that pages will render properly. To further ensure IE11 users don’t receive an odd version of the site, Microsoft also included the command “Like Gecko” which instructs the website to send back the same version of the website as they would to Firefox. The results of this update are unknown, especially on websites which are poorly coded. The move is strange, but shows that Microsoft is desperate to clean up Internet Explorer and get away from the awful experience in IE6, 7 and 8.
Such an amazing legacy IE has built.

*kreun* En andere browsers doen dit niet? ... Als Microsoft het doet is het opeens nieuws.
Dat hele IE-bashen is echt zo lame en getuigt van weinig historisch perspectief. In dit specifieke geval is het zelf nog achterlijker dan gewoon.
