Details over Stargate SG-1 films

Stargate SG-1 co-creator and Stargate: Continuum writer Brad Wright revealed to GateWorld that his movie is scheduled to be released on DVD in July, 2008.

"I think the summer is a great time to release a movie like Continuum," he said. "Because it's fun. It's a fun movie."

The direct-to-DVD film will feature the return of multiple guest stars, including Cliff Simon ("Baal"), Jacqueline Samuda ("Nirrti") and, don't forget, Richard Dean Anderson ("O'Neill").

"In a way, it's a throwback," Wright told GateWorld. "Continuum is more like Stargate of old than it is going forward. It's a good 'ole Stargate story made as big as possible. And that, in part, is because Rick is in it. But it's also because it is a time-travel story. Therefore I was able to bring back a lot of very familiar faces who've been gone for some time."

In the movie, enemies of the Goa'uld are celebrating. The last standing System Lord, Baal, is scheduled to be executed. But before he can be eliminated, Teal'c and Vala vanish. It is soon revealed that the timeline has been altered, the Stargate program no longer exists, and SG-1's missing personnel are now serving the enemy.

But what of the reset-button effect? If SG-1 fans only get two new stories per year, do we want one to have no lasting effect on continuity when it is finished? Wright discloses an interesting nugget that will make this time travel story different than others told in the past.

"The timeline has been changed at the end of Continuum in a subtle, but permanent way," Wright said. "And that is actually illustrated in the final frame of the picture. You'll see. It's cool. Keep in mind, too, in this time travel story, what makes this subtly different than other stories we've done is these guys remember the old timeline.

"That's what makes Continuum different. That's what makes it the time travel story I wanted to do. As the movie unfolds, and as Baal's plan unfolds, we try to get back to Earth and, granted, it's a conceit of mine that traveling through the wormhole keeps them immune from the effects of the timeline."

"Wormholes are a conceit, too," he laughed.

The visual effects budget for the film is substantial. Even as he waits for the in-house effects department to have time to devote to Continuum, Brad is still coming up with shots.

"I have a sequence over the Atlantic with F-15's and Goa'uld death gliders. ... I have a freighter in the ocean crossing the Atlantic that is a visual effect. I have a lot of visual effects, and it's going to take a significant amount of time to finish them."

Het is dat Cliff Simon (Ba'al) een van mijn favouriete Stargate SG-1 Acteurs is, maar tijd-reizen is ondertussen zo onorgineel na minstens 10000000000 films en series met het zelfde thema, dat ze wel verdomd orgineel verhaal moeten maken voor de rest

Je hebt gelijk.... maar wat nog veel irritanter is met 'tijdreizen', dat het altijd enorm veel vragen oproept. Veel zaken wanneer je er wat dieper over nadenkt gewoon niet mogelijk is. ' Tijdreizen' is zo'n complexe materie waaraan je eigenlijk helemaal niet aan wilt beginnen...
Ik ba'al (woorspeling) dan ook als een stekker dat deze film over fucking ' timetraveling' gaat...

Wel kewl dat Ba'al erbij is. Een van de weinige Gua'uld die zichzelf niet al te serieus neemt...

Tijdreizen... wat mij betreft was dat thema alleen leuk in H.G. Wells' klassieker en in de Back to the Future trilogie.

It's been done.

Ik zou het interessant vinden als een complex onderwerp als tijdreizen eens goed werd benaderd in een film, met alle voor en nadelen die eraan vastzitten. Nee, niet the Sound of Thunder of iets dergelijks, maar pure, keiharde wetenschap in een film die je verstand tot het uiterste doet gaan.

Waar de film uiteindelijk om draait is de terugkeer van een of ander karakter zo dat die weer gebruikt kan worden in vervolgen of de lopende serie. Verwacht een flinterdun verhaal, een tussendoortje, maar geen volwaardig SG verhaal. Het gaat uiteindelijk om die kleine subtiele verandering die weer uitgemolken kan worden in vervolgen.

En ik dacht dat ze alleen bij Marvel comics cheesy plots konden verzinnen.

MGM Studios and Fox Home Entertainment will release Stargate: The Ark of Truth on March 11, 2008, according to a new report at TVShowsOnDVD.com. This date is only official for the Region 1 release (United States and Canada) at this time.

Up until today, most marketing for the first post-series Stargate SG-1 movie has only vaguely spoken of the release date as being sometime in 2008.

The 97-minute feature will be in widescreen format, with English Dolby 5.1 audio, French and Spanish Dolby Surround audio, and subtitles in English and Spanish. Extras on the DVD have not been unveiled, but if the past is any indicator, it is likely to include commentaries and extras developed by special features producer Ivan Bartok.

The DVD will come with a $26.98 suggested retail price ($37.98 Canadian), according to the report.

Stargate: Continuum on DVD July 29

The long-awaited SG-1 movie Stargate: Continuum arrives on DVD in North America on July 29, writer and producer Brad Wright confirmed to GateWorld today. And the film stands head and shoulders above even the biggest episodes of the television series, according to the producer.

"This is the biggest, best thing I think I've ever done for Stargate," Wright said. "I'm very proud of it. You always have some small regret with something that you couldn't pull off. [You say] 'I wish we could have done this, I wish we could have had that.' [But] there are so few regrets with how Continuum turned out that it's not even worth mentioning. Martin [Wood] did such a good job directing it, and we had such a good time on set together."

The trailer for Continuum will make its world premiere Saturday at the official Stargate convention in Vancouver, and should appear online soon thereafter. (Watch GateWorld Play right here on the site! You will see the trailer as soon as we can bring it to you.)

Wright also described the scenario that will bring the Stargate to a ship lodged in the ice in the Arctic.

"The Stargate [was] at its most vulnerable in history -- or at least since it was dug up -- was when it was being transported from Africa to North America at the outbreak of World War II," he said. "So the Stargate is on its way across, Baal is going to sink the ship, [and] somehow an heroic act has to take place to stop the ship from being sunk.

"[And] what if the captain of that boat, by cosmic coincidence, happened to be the grandfather of Mitchell?"

When Baal succeeds in altering the timeline, SG-1 (with their memories intact, since wormhole travel essentially takes them out of space-time during the change) gates back to Earth only to find themselves in the cargo hold of the frozen ship, rather than at Stargate Command.

"And, of course, then there's the 'getting out of it' part -- which is the rest of the movie!" Wright added.

"It was so much fun. And the visual effects are among the best we have ever done. ... Craig, who used to be at Image Engine, his team did the F-16 flying sequences, and they're feature [film] quality. ... It's the big movie I always wanted to make, and it's not a hell of a lot smaller in scope than the one I would have put as a theatrical release. It feels like it could have been a theatrical release in many ways."

Ondanks het geschreeuw zag het er vet uit. Beter dan the ark of truth die ik een lichte teleurstelling vond. Vooral het gevecht van de F16's ziet er cool uit

Inderdaad wel aardig. Wel beter dan the ark of truth. Alleen is het wel jammer dat Continuum meer aanvoelde als een dubbele aflevering, waarin de spanning opgebouwd werd tot aan het einde van het eerste uur en daarna wat inzakte om vervolgens het laatste kwartier pas echt spannend te worden.

Wat me wel opviel was dat er meer goorheid werd gebruikt, 2 scenes vooral (Baal en Apophis).
