Beware of spoilers for the fourth season of Stargate Atlantis in the story below!
As Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) takes over command of the Stargate Atlantis expedition, she will have to do more than just worry about the constant expressions of lust from Rodney McKay (David Hewlett).
The fourth season of Atlantis will feature a new alien race with technology far beyond that of the expedition, as well as a storyline centered around the real-life pregnancy of Rachel Luttrell ("Teyla Emmagan").
"We had a story in development where [Teyla] would be out in the woods with Jewel [Staite], and it was a fairly violent episode," said Paul Mullie, executive producer of Atlantis, during Tuesday's SCI FI Channel digital media tour in Vancouver, B.C. "We were writing the story when [Luttrell] came in and told us she was pregnant. We were too far down the road to change it, so we decided that, 'Oh well, she doesn't know she's pregnant in this story.' It was the story which in the end she finds out."
Producers decided to write Luttrell's pregnancy into the show, although they would not give details on exactly how the pregnancy would be incorporated. Luttrell, who was showing physical signs of her pregnancy at the press event, said jokingly that her pregnancy was a way to make sure that the producers further developed her character in the fourth season.
"This was to ensure more of a character arc," Luttrell said. Mullie, however, added that they had wanted to incorporate a strong story arc for Teyla in the fourth season, and her pregnancy made it that much easier to find a way to do it.
Outside of making babies, the Atlantis expedition is going to make contact with its first race that is actually far more technologically advanced than just about every other culture they have faced. Because cultures in the galaxy tend to not advance very far society-wise because of cullings by the Wraith, cultures that are more advanced than those manning Atlantis have been few and far between.
However, the Travelers, as they are called, are expected to make an appearance early in the fourth season ("Travelers").
"One of the things that Atlantis kind of lacked that [Stargate SG-1] had were technologically advanced races," said executive producer Joseph Mallozzi. "We created this race called the Travelers. They are nomads, traveling on ships and establishing a civilization. They are very rustic, and have a very cool look."
The Travellers are expected to show up again sometime after the fourth episode during the upcoming season, Mallozzi said.

wat een geniale mensen zijn het toch...
dit bevestigt wel weer het feit dat de schrijvers geen enkel benul hebben over waar ze heen willen met de serie. ze klooien maar wat aan.
- eerst nemen ze de hele setting van SG-1 over (Wraith als Goa'uld), maar denken niet na en spreken het hele Wraith verhaal constant tegen waardoor er geen hol meer van klopt;
- als ze merken dat dat niet werkt gaan ze maar andere vijanden van SG-1 jatten. in plaats van een overlap te maken tussen de twee series kopieren ze gewoon een vijand en verneuken de Replicators nog harder dan Voyager dat met de de Borg deed;
- nu ze ook die verhaallijn in amper één seizoen hebben verklooid komen ze aan met cool looking advanced aliens; dat zal het 14 jarige publiek aan de buis gekluisterd houden!
ooh, you've gotta love this
Outside of making babies, the Atlantis expedition is going to make contact with its first race that is actually far more technologically advanced than just about every other culture they have faced. Wednesday - August 15, 2007 | by Darren Sumner
Beware of SPOILERS for the Atlantis Season Four episode "This Mortal Coil" in the story below.
The SCI FI Channel confirmed its plans for this fall's broadcast schedule today, including new details on the fourth season of Stargate Atlantis.
Season Four premieres on Friday, September 28 in a new timeslot: 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, 9 p.m. Central. Atlantis's mid-season finale ("This Mortal Coil") will air on December 7, and will feature the return of former series regular Torri Higginson as Dr. Elizabeth Weir.
In the episode, "the Atlantis team must ally itself with a known enemy to join forces against an even greater foe," the site said. Based on currently known spoilers, it is believed that the Atlantis team allies with the Wraith against the human-form Replicators. Sheppard's Wraith ally from last year's "Common Ground" will return in Season Four.
It is believed that the network will air the full season straight through with only a break for Thanksgiving and the December holiday season, though SCI FI has yet to confirm this. If true, new episodes will pick up with "Be All My Sins Remember'd" in early January.
Sky One in the U.K. has not yet announced its premiere date for Atlantis Season Four.
Check out SCI FI Wire for the original story, which also includes details on the Battlestar Galactica telemovie "Razor" and the network's "minisodes" set to air in the weeks leading up to the November broadcast.

The upcoming fourth season of Stargate Atlantis will end with an episode titled "The Last Man" in 2008. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi revealed the final title of the year at his blog. The episode will film in Vancouver in late September and early October.
While little is known about the finale, Mallozzi has said that it will be somewhat related to the events of "The Kindred," the two-parter which preceeds it.
"Like most season finales, this one will be big -- but very, very different," he said.
The episode is tentatively scheduled to premiere on March 7, 2008, on SCI FI Channel in the United States (and soon thereafter in the U.K. and Canada). Season Four premieres Friday, September 28 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on SCI FI!
