RENEWED! Stargate Atlantis gets fifth season

Wednesday - October 24, 2007 | by Darren Sumner

Stargate Atlantis will continue to a fifth season on SCI FI Channel, the network announced today.

SCI FI ordered 20 episodes for Season Five of the series, which despite lower "Live" ratings this year has maintained its status as one of the cable channel's most-watched original dramas.

"'Atlantis' truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series this year and proved that it's a hit in its own right," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of original programming for SCI FI Channel.

"All of us at MGM are pleased to be extending the Stargate legacy with 20 new original episodes of Stargate Atlantis for our friends at SCI FI," MGM's Charles E. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President Finance and Corporate Development, said. "Viewers the world over clamor for exciting new stories of space exploration, distant civilizations and the marvels of technology, all of which continue to be delivered by Stargate Atlantis."

The show will celebrate its 100th episode as the fifth season finale.

Other shows renewed include Eureka for a third season, according to Variety. The fate of Flash Gordon is still uncertain. A brand new series, titled Revolution, has also received the green light.

Atlantis's fourth season will end on a cliffhanger when the season finale, "The Last Man," airs in March.

(Farscape, Enterprise, BSG). Goed dat SGA doorgaat :)

Stargate Atlantis will continue to a fifth season on SCI FI Channel, the network announced today.
Other shows renewed include Eureka for a third season, according to Variety.
Absoluut leuke, goeie serie.

The SCI FI Channel in the U.S. has picked up Internet-based fantasy series Sanctuary for a full, 13-episode first season, the network announced today. The series was conceived and written by former Stargate SG-1 writer and producer Damian Kindler, and stars Amanda Tapping ("Samantha Carter"). Tapping is also an executive producer on the show.

The one-hour drama will begin filming in March, produced by Stage 3 Media in association with the SCI FI Channel.

Sanctuary premiered in 2007 as a one-of-a-kind Internet series, with eight installments adding up to the equivalent of two hour-long episodes. But the producers have always had their eyes on other mediums, including television.

Sanctuary is the first television series using live-action actors against mostly virtual, green-screen sets -- a new way of filming that contributed to the box office success of last year's historical action epic "300," for example.

Tapping stars as Dr. Helen Magnus, a 157-year-old scientist who runs a secret organization that seeks out extraordinary people, both to help them and to contain the more dangerous.

"Magnus is the antithesis of Carter," Tapping recently told Voices from Krypton. She's so completely different. She's a renegade. She's very sexual. From Army boots to stilettos ... the leap is enormous. Everything from her history to her accent, from how she walks to what she wears. Her whole outlook on life is just completely different. So as an actor, it's just totally invigorating."

Stargate director Martin Wood will also serve as an executive producer on the new series, as will Sam Egan (The Outer Limits, Jeremiah). Wood directed Sanctuary's 2-hour pilot, which was released online over eight installments last year.

Robin Dunne plays Will Zimmerman in the new fantasy series.
Also starring in Sanctuary is Robin Dunne (Dawson's Creek) as Will Zimmerman, a medical doctor and Magnus's new protégé, and Emilie Ullerup as her ass-kicking daughter, Ashley. Frequent Stargate Atlantis guest star Christopher Heyerdahl (Halling, "Todd" the Wraith) plays Magnus's murderous former lover, John Druitt. (Don't miss GateWorld's brand new interview with Heyerdahl!) The cast will remain intact for the television series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The show will make use of a lot of footage from the Web series, according to the paper, with some additional enhancement of visual effects and computer-generated backgrounds, to improve the show's look on the TV screen.

"'Sanctuary' promises to be a totally fresh television viewing experience,' Mark Stern, SCI FI's Executive Vice President of Original Programming, said. "This stylistic approach to 'virtual sets' has proven hugely popular on the big screen, and we have been looking for a chance to use it on a television series. We've worked with Damian, Martin, Amanda, and Sam on numerous projects in the past, and think they are the perfect team to tackle something this ambitious."

Tricon Films and Television will handle the international distribution of Sanctuary, meaning it will likely show up in other countries soon.

What about Stargate Atlantis?
The new series will have a significant impact on Tapping's role in the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis, which begins production in late February. (That series is planning its own big, casting-related announcement this coming Monday, according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi.)

"In addition to her producing and starring turns on Sanctuary, Amanda Tapping will also make guest appearances on several episodes of SCI FI Channel's Stargate Atlantis during its fifth season," the network press release reads.

Confirmation is still pending, but this statement seems to indicate that Tapping will not return to Atlantis this year as a series regular. But don't count Sam Carter out yet, as she is expected to make a number of guest appearances.

Whether or not that means Carter will step down as base commander, or the Atlantis writers will simply write around her schedule more, remains to be seen. The character appeared in 14 of Season Four's 20 episodes. The producers of Stargate have yet to comment publicly.

The actress crossed over to Atlantis last year as part of her 2-year deal with the studio, after Stargate SG-1 was not renewed for an eleventh season. Her long-term commitment to the show was never certain.

First Details season 5
Beware of SPOILERS for "The Kindred" and "Search and Rescue" in the report below.

The first solid info has arrived at GateWorld for "Search and Rescue," the premiere episode of Stargate Atlantis's fifth season.

With next year's cast list still somewhat unknown, just who appears in the first episode is as significant as the story info itself. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite), Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), and Major Lorne (recurring guest star Kavan Smith) all appear in the episode, as does Michael (Connor Trinneer) and Kanaan, the Athosian who Teyla believes fathered her child ("Missing").

This list is, of course, not exhaustive of who will return for Season Five, or for this episode. Mention is also made of Colonel Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) returning from a mission ("The Last Man"). Our information on "Search and Rescue" is limited, and Jason Momoa ("Ronon Dex") and Rachel Luttrell ("Teyla Emmagan") are certainly expected to return.

Tapping has already confirmed that she will not be a regular cast member in Season Five.

The premiere will also feature Captain Alison Porter, a new member of the Atlantis expedition's military contingent. Porter arrived on the base one week before the episode's start, but has not yet been assigned to a team. The episode may be introducing her as a new recurring character or, if we dare to speculate before this Monday's impending cast announcement, perhaps even a new regular.

Since the story follows up on the concluding events of Season Four's "The Kindred" two-parter and the season finale, "The Last Man," which have not yet aired, we will avoid any major plot spoilers from the end of those episodes:

Captain Alison Porter, a 28-year-old new addition to Atlantis, speaks with Colonel Carter about her lack of an assignment. When the Stargate activates, the two rush down the stairs to meet Lt. Edison. Edison has rushed back from Michael's compound, where a number of Atlantis personnel are now trapped. He has come for back-up and to secure rescue for his team and the others.

Carter and Porter, joined by Dr. Keller and a contingent, gear up and head to the planet in a cloaked Jumper. They begin searching for their missing people -- including McKay and Lorne, who find themselves trapped together with no way out. But the team is being watched from overhead: Michael is on board a cruiser orbiting the planet, scanning their life signs. When he determines that the Atlantians are there and may still prove useful to his agenda, he launches Wraith Darts to capture them.

The search team falls back to their Jumper to wait for reinforcements, but it's too late to use the Stargate: the Wraith have dialed into the planet, preventing their escape. Now they, like their missing friends, are trapped.
"Search and Rescue" was written by Martin Gero, is expected to go before cameras in late February under the direction of Andy Mikita. SCI FI Channel in the United States has not yet announced when Season Five will premiere. If they stick with last year's schedule, look for it in the fall.

New episodes of Season Four are now airing every Friday night at 10 p.m. (9 p.m. Central) on SCI FI! "The Kindred" airs February 22 and 29.
Tapping weg :D
Mallozzi discusses Tapping's departure

Friday - February 1, 2008 | by Darren Sumner

After eleven years on the Stargate franchise, actress Amanda Tapping ("Samantha Carter") will leave her role as a regular cast member on Stargate Atlantis to pursue her own show this year. Sanctuary begins filming 13 episodes for SCI FI Channel in March (story, interview).

What will become of Atlantis and her well-established character? Today GateWorld spoke with Joseph Mallozzi, executive producer and show-runner (with Paul Mullie) for Atlantis's current season and upcoming fifth season.

"We love the Samantha Carter character and have always enjoyed writing for her," Mallozzi said. "She was a great addition to Atlantis's fourth season and, while she will be missed, it's not as if we're closing the door on her. Carter will remain a major player in the Stargate universe as well as a guest star on Atlantis's fifth season."

Tapping will appear in the season premiere, "Search and Rescue."

Mallozzi has hinted on his blog in recent weeks that there will be at least one more big change to the show's cast, which is set to be announced by the network in a press release this Monday. That cast member is apparently the base's new commanding officer, based on comments Mallozzi made today in his blog:

"Carter will be one of a number of familiar faces that will be popping up in the Pegasus Galaxy in Season Five -- including a new commander. Remember way back, when I said we had considered a handful of possible candidates for the command position at the beginning of Season Four? Well, this person made that short list then, and we're very excited about his/her/its(?) addition to our cast of regulars."

The show's producers had hoped to keep the actress full-time for the new season, which presented the actress with a difficult decision -- which she speaks about in part two of GateWorld's interview, coming tomorrow.

Joseph Mallozzi
"As recently as November-ish, I believe I stated our desire to have Amanda return for the show's fifth season," Mallozzi said. "That said, I can't say we were surprised by her decision. Clearly, the Sanctuary project is very important to her and Amanda was in the unenviable position of having to choose between two productions dear to her.

"Still, at the end of the day, I think that things have turned out positively for both shows. More on that in Monday's press release."

Sanctuary will certainly benefit from Tapping's talents, as well as those of several other people who have worked on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. "A lot of the people involved in the production worked on Stargate. In many ways, they're like family to us," Mallozzi said. "This is no doubt a very exciting time for them and we wish them nothing but the best as they prepare for the challenges of a 13-episode production schedule."

What of the rest of the Stargate Atlantis cast -- including Jewel Staite, who joined the show in a recurring role alongside Tapping last year? And who will be taking command of the base? What about Carson Beckett, who Mallozzi has hinted in his blog may appear in Season Five?

"The press release coming out on Monday should answer most fan questions," Mallozzi said.

Keep your browser locked on GateWorld this Monday for the big announcement! New episodes of Stargate Atlantis air Fridays at 10 p.m. (9 Central) on SCI FI Channel in the United States.

Beware of minor SPOILERS for Season Four's "The Kindred" in the report below.

We are still anxiously awaiting SCI FI Channel's press release announcing the cast of Stargate Atlantis for the show's fifth season, which begins filming later this month. That release has been pushed back to tomorrow (Tuesday), according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi (blog). But tonight we can squash a few rumors and speculation, thanks in large part to the executive producer.

The items below are tagged as CONFIRMED, DENIED, or -- if we don't have solid confirmation either way -- RUMOR.

CONFIRMED: Amanda Tapping will no longer be a regular cast member in Season Five.
SCI FI announced and Tapping ("Samantha Carter") confirmed to GateWorld this week that she will star in 13 episodes of the new fantasy series Sanctuary, which goes into production in March. Stargate wanted Tapping back and made a competitive offer, but she finally chose to pursue the new series, for which she also serves as an executive producer (interview).

Tapping will make a still unspecified number of guest appearances in Season Five.

CONFIRMED: Atlantis will get a new commander.
As Tapping departs the show, Colonel Carter will also depart Atlantis. Mallozzi has told fans that the new base commander will be a "familiar face," someone we have met before and not a brand new character. This actor will be a regular, full-time cast member -- and, in fact, he or she made the short list when the writers were considering Weir's replacement a year ago.

DENIED: Sheppard will be promoted and command Atlantis.
Mallozzi confirmed today that "there has never been any discussion about promoting Sheppard and his leadership responsibilities as team leader will remain unchanged."

RUMOR: The new commander will be Colonel Caldwell, Colonel Ellis, Richard Woolsey, General Hammond, General Landry, ad infinitum.
There is understandably a great deal of speculation as to who will be taking charge of the Atlantis base. So far they can be chalked up to educated guesses. There are certain characters who have been up for the position in the past within the show's universe (Caldwell, Woolsey), and certain actors which the producers have expressed a lot of positive feelings about working with in the past.

What does seem clear, based on Mallozzi's comments to date, is that one of the show's current main characters (notably Sheppard or McKay) will not be promoted to base commander. The new guy or gal will be a new addition to the main cast.

DENIED: The writers are bringing back Torri Higginson.
Well, yes and no. She won't rejoin the cast as a series regular and will not be commanding Atlantis again, but the actress behind Dr. Elizabeth Weir will return as a guest star for an on-going story arc in Season Five. Check out the last 60 seconds of "Be All My Sins Remember'd" for more on that.

DENIED: Rachel Luttrell is leaving the show to spend time with her new son.
Luttrell's ("Teyla Emmagan") pregnancy was written into Season Four, and she delivered her son late in 2007. But don't expect Teyla to stay on the sidelines: "Rachel remains a series regular and an important part of the team," Mallozzi said. "Two of the first three episodes see some major developments for the character."

RUMOR: A new character named Alison Porter will be added to the cast.
Captain Porter, described as a 28-year-old, fiery new addition to Atlantis's military contingent, will be introduced in the Season Five premiere, "Search and Rescue." It is not known yet who will play her, and whether she will be a regular cast member or a recurring guest star. Mallozzi did confirm today that Porter will not be assigned to Sheppard's team.

The manner in which the character is introduced in the episode suggests that she is a significant new addition (not a one-off guest, or a female Lorne), but the number of already-confirmed regular cast members make it less likely that she will be quite at that status.

RUMOR: Paul McGillion will return as Dr. Carson Beckett.
The good doctor returns in the upcoming Season Four two-parter, "The Kindred." Hint after hint dropped by Mallozzi indicates that the Scotsman with a heart of gold will return to recurring status in Season Five ... but of course, this has not been confirmed, and won't be until the press release is issued.

Well then, what about Jason Momoa and David Hewlett?
Both are currently expected to return. Momoa recently cut off his long dreadlocks, which Mallozzi has discussed in terms of the challenge of character continuity at the beginning of Season Five. (The dreads will be painstakingly reattached for a few episodes, after which Ronon will no doubt get a haircut of his own.)

Nothing specific has been said about Hewlett's return, but McKay remains a central part of the Atlantis team and appears in the script for the first episode.

In sum, our expectation on the eve of the press release is that the main cast of Stargate Atlantis for Season Five will include Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, Jason Momoa, David Hewlett, and a new cast member playing the new commander of Atlantis. We anticipate that Jewel Staite ("Jennifer Keller"), Paul McGillion, and perhaps the actress cast to play Alison Porter, will be recurring.

Both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis have had either five or six regular cast members each season, and making Porter (or Staite's character, for that matter) a regular would probably mean bumping that number to seven.

Note that the distinction between "regular" and "recurring" does not necessarily affect the number of episodes in which an actor will appear. (Series regulars appear in the show's opening title sequence.) As a regular Tapping appears in 14 of this season's 20 episodes; as recurring McGillion appeared in some 16 episodes in the first season, and about the same after he was made a regular. Jewel Staite was recurring in Season Four but was widely treated as a full-fledged cast member in the show's promotional efforts, including cast photos.

Again, remember that everything here is based on educated speculation from the evidence currently available. Stay tuned to GateWorld for the official news as soon as SCI FI Channel announces it!

Atlantis To Start Season 5

SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will begin production later this month on its fifth season, the channel announced. The 20-episode season will include the series' benchmark 100th episode.

Fan favorite Paul McGillion will return for five episodes to reprise his role as Dr. Carson Beckett. Amanda Tapping (Col. Samantha Carter) will appear as a special guest star in several episodes, and Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson) will appear as a special guest in episodes as well.

Robert Picardo, who plays International Oversight Committee rep Richard Woolsey, joins the Atlantis cast this season as Woolsey assumes command of the Atlantis expedition. The team, led by Lt. Col. Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite), must adjust to his unique leadership style.

In the fifth season, the status quo is shaken following the events of season four, which is currently airing on SCI FI Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Cherished friends are lost, others are found. New alliances are forged while new races are introduced.

Produced and distributed by MGM Television, Stargate Atlantis is filmed in Vancouver, Canada. The series is executive-produced by Brad Wright, Robert Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, Carl Binder and Martin Gero. Mallozzi and Mullie share the reins as show runners.

Higginson out for Season Five

Saturday - February 9, 2008 | by Darren Sumner

Beware of major SPOILERS for Season Four's "Be All My Sins Remember'd" in the report below.

Stargate Atlantis and the actress behind Dr. Elizabeth Weir seem to have gone their separate ways.

The actress has turned down an offer to appear in an episode of the show's fifth season, which the writers hoped would be the start of an on-going arc, according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi.

After three years in the role of Atlantis's civilian commander, Torri Higginson was reduced from regular cast member to recurring status, appearing in four episodes of Season Four. Weir suffered a close call with a Replicator energy weapon, brain surgery, and captivity and cloning at the hands of the Replicators.

Just when fans thought the character had been killed off, Weir returned for the shocking final minute of January's top-rated episode "Be All My Sins Remember'd." Elizabeth, or perhaps some form of Replicator copy of her, was in command of a group of surviving Replicators who are about to undertake a secret project, now that Oberoth and the rest of the Replicators have been destroyed.

"Last year, after we shot that final surprise scene in ["Be All My Sins Remember'd"], I stopped by Torri's trailer to congratulate her on a job well done and, also, to assure her that the door was left wide open for Weir's possible return (in some form, be it repli-Weir or other) the following season," Mallozzi said Friday in a post at his blog. "Torri was excited by the prospect and, in particular, had great things to say about her new leather outfit."

The writers had devised a new storyline for Higginson's character, which they planned to revisit in Season Five.

"As Season Four wrapped, Carl [Binder] and Paul [Mullie] got to spinning and came up with a terrific storyline that picked up where that last scene of ["Be All My Sins Remember'd"] left off," Mallozzi said. "We had a story in place for one episode, the starting point of a potentially bigger arc. The script was written and we eventually contacted Torri who, after much consideration, turned down the offer to reprise the role of Elizabeth Weir for the episode.

Weir shocked viewers with her reappearance at the end of "Be All My Sins Remember'd," indicating the the show's writers still had plans for her.
"We are, of course, disappointed, but nevertheless respect Torri's decision and wish her all the best in her future endeavors."

Higginson's reasons for turning down the job are, of course, unknown. But the relationship between the actress and the studio has been understandably strained since the actress -- who signed a 6-year deal and relocated to Vancouver when she was cast in 2004 -- was removed from the cast list.

"The very last day of filming Season Three, as I finished filming the last scene on the last day, I was called up to the office and was told that my character was going to become recurring if I chose to be," Higginson recently said in an interview with DTRN's "SciFi Guys" Internet radio program. "So, I thought that was not a very dignified way to deal with it, and I was a bit surprised. So my reaction was -- I was a little bit surprised. I was a little bit upset by how it was dealt with."

The producers, for their part, believed they were being gracious to Higginson. "Do you know how many actors find out their role on a show has been diminished or done away with?" Mallozzi wrote on his blog, in response to a fan question about Higginson's comments. "The season wraps, the actor leaves for hiatus, and then his or her contract isn't picked up. Their agent does the math for them. To many producers, this a much easier and less confrontational way of handling the situation which, obviously, lacks the professional courtesy and respect of a face-to-face meeting."

Whether the writers still plan to revisit the rogue Replicator storyline -- sans Weir -- remains to be seen.

As for Higginson, she has guest starred in a recent episode of N.C.I.S. and will appear in two forthcoming films: "Yumi in Love" and "Smile of April." Visit the fan Web site Torri Higginson Info to learn more.

Season Five is now in pre-production, and goes before cameras next week. Season Four is now airing Fridays at 10 p.m. (9 Central) on SCI FI Channel in the United States.
