HIT show Doctor Who will be EXTERMINATED next year — after the fourth series.
Boss Russell T. Davies has decided to axe the BBC1 sci-fi drama and concentrate on other projects.
He and senior staff have hatched a plot to hand in a group resignation in summer 2008.
A source said: “The heavy workload — nine months of 16-hour days every year — has started to take its toll.
“It was decided the best thing for the show was go out at the top next year.”
Davies was behind the relaunch of Doctor Who in 2005 — 16 years after it was originally axed.
The series, starring David Tennant as the Time Lord, is watched by eight million every Saturday.

Apparently it isn't enough for Patrick Stewart (Picard) to star as Claudius opposite the most recent Doctor Who, David Tennant, in Hamlet. The esteemed Shakespearean actor wants to appear in the long-running British science fiction series, too.
"I have been [a fan] actually, yes," Stewart told Scotland's The Press and Journal when asked about Doctor Who. "And deeply dismayed that I was never asked to be in it."
Already a star in the X-Men franchise as well as Star Trek, Stewart added, "I think it's a terrific series." The actor has sometimes distanced himself from science fiction, insisting that his series Eleventh Hour could more accurately be described as scientific than sci-fi.
Currently Stewart is appearing in Macbeth in London and said that playing the famous king was "beyond his expectations" though he remains too superstitious to quote from the play or mention it. "I found the role and the play to be so much more fascinating, interesting, line by line than I ever thought it would be," he stated. "Which is why I could never imagine becoming stale in this role, because it is moment by moment so compelling."
Stewart will appear at the Gielgud Theatre through December 1st. The original article is here.

This will definitely be a busy, busy, busy season of "Doctor Who" in early 2008 when The Doctor will not have just one, just two, but three companions. In fact, if John Barrowman also returns as rumored, the Tardis will be a pretty crowded place.
BBC has confirmed that Billie Piper -- who played Rose Tyler in the first two seasons of "Doctor Who" -- will somehow find her way out of the parallel universe and will return to help out David Tennant when he reprises his role as The Doctor.
The companion issue has been a delicate one for "Doctor Who" since Piper's departure. Freema Agyeman received a lot of publicity for being Piper's replacement, but she did not resonate well with audiences. It's not clear if that contributed to Agyeman's early departure from the series or not, but Agyeman left the show following the third season finale, but is set to return in three episodes of the "Doctor Who" spinoff "Torchwood" as well as "Doctor Who" itself in its fourth season.
Soon after the season finale, it was announced that Catherine Tate -- who played a guest stint in the 2006 Christmas special -- would reprise her role of Donna full-time in the fourth season, but even that seemed to be not-so-certain as filming began.
Piper's return had been rumored for some time, but it's not clear if that will also include a return of Noel Clarke as her boyfriend Mickey and Camille Coduri as her mother.
The fourth season is set to premiere in March for 13 episodes on BBC before taking a break in 2009 in time for a fifth season in 2010.
The annual Christmas special, featuring Kylie Minogue and the Titanic, will air Dec. 25.
Ben benieuwd hoe zich dat gaat ontwikkelen tusen Rose en The Doctor. De laatste keer dat ze elkaar zagen hadden ze bijna hun liefde voor elkaar verklaard.
