Breaking taboos
DS9 is also notable for breaking several cultural taboos during its run. Most prominent among these is the issue of homosexuality. Gay and gay-friendly fans of the franchise had been waiting for a Star Trek television spin-off to address how a utopian society would deal with sexual orientation, since Gene Roddenberry had promised in 1987 to tackle the issue.[19] While Star Trek: The Next Generation gingerly addressed the issue through gender identity on occasion, two DS9 episodes showcased a kiss between people of the same sex.

The first same-sex kiss on a Star Trek television series was in the episode "Rejoined", in which Jadzia Dax and another Trill named Lenara Kahn embrace and passionately kiss. The two were neither lesbians nor was the kiss a "lesbian" kiss; rather the controversy was primarily over two actresses kissing. The two characters had been married in previous lives when the Dax symbiont in a male host was in love with the Kahn symbiont in a female host. None of the other characters are shocked by this. Writer Rene Echevarria made a conscious effort not to glamorize the kiss to make it a ratings booster. The point was to emphasize the romance, not to sensationalize.[3] This episode aired a year and a half before the controversial "out of the closet" shift in the sitcom Ellen, and proved troublesome for some local affiliates.[19]

In the seventh season episode "The Emperor’s New Cloak", versions of Kira Nerys and Ezri Dax in a parallel Mirror Universe also kiss. The Mirror Universe Leeta and Ezri are also attracted to each other. Although no homosexual character was dealt with directly, the pre-Ellen same-sex kisses were often compared to the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Plato’s Stepchildren", which featured a famous interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura.

In the sixth season of DS9, transvestism is used for humorous effect in "Profit and Lace". Quark's mother suffers a heart attack prior to a critical meeting with an influential businessman she had hoped to recruit to the cause of women's rights on the Ferengi home world. As there are no other Ferengi females on the station, Quark undergoes a temporary sex change, becoming a female named Lumba. She attempts to impress the man, who flirts and falls in love with her, chasing Lumba around a room. The episode was intended to be lighthearted. However promotional spots depicted Quark's predicament as "a real drag", and the episode was poorly received by fans; it has been heavily criticized. Actor Andrew Robinson has stated that he portrayed Garak as an omnisexual in an early episode, but stopped because it "gave people fits."[20]

In addition to sexuality, there were several instances of potentially offensive language during the series' run, unprecedented for the Star Trek franchise (although Star Trek: Enterprise went much further, even using the phrase "son of a bitch" several times). The DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars", much of which takes place in 1950s Earth, features a scene in which Cirroc Lofton claims that blacks will never get into space except to "shine the shoes" of whites, to whom his character feels blacks "would always be niggers." Although not the first time the word nigger had been used on American television (it was commonly used in dramas in the 1970s), by the late 1990s, the word had all but vanished from mainstream media. Another occurrence likely went unnoticed among American audiences; in the episode "Time’s Orphan", Irish Chief O’Brien utters the British and Irish swear word "bollocks". Furthermore, the series used several invented racial epithets for alien races in the series, namely "spoonhead" and "Cardies" for Cardassians.

The portrayal of the Ferengi characters prompted occasional criticism from several Jewish-American groups, primarily because it was felt that the of the casting of three Jewish-American actors as the lead Ferengi characters played into the prejudicial Jewish stereotype of greed and being obsessed with financial gain.[citation needed]

A list of Star Trek books projected to be released through early 2009 was released today at the New York Comic-Con.

As reported by TrekBBS, the Star Trek Book panel at Comic-Con, run by Marco Palmieri, Margaret Clark, David Mack, Christopher L. Bennett and Keith R.A. DeCandido, announced the forthcoming Star Trek books that will appear in bookstores from May 2008 through May 2009.

Terok Nor: Night of the Wolves by S.D. Perry & Britta Dennison will be released in May of 2008.

June 2008 will see the appearance of two books: DS9: These Haunted Seas by David R. George III & Heather Jarman, and Terok Nor: Dawn of the Eagles by S.D. Perry & Britta Dennison

Two books will also be offered in July of 2008: Myriad Universes: Infinity's Prism by Christopher L. Bennett, William Leisner and James Swallow and DS9: Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods.

In August, look for Myriad Universes: Echoes and Refractions by Keith R.A. DeCandido, Chris Roberson and Geoff Trowbridge; and TNG: Greater than the Sum by Christopher L. Bennett.

September 2008 will see the publication of Star Trek 101, authored by Terry J. Erdmann and Paula M. Block. Star Trek 101 is a primer for the new or casual Star Trek fan, who may be interested in Star Trek XI. There will also be some fun things included for more dedicated fans. Also in September, look for Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels.

October's books are: COE: Wounds by Ilsa J. Bick, Keith R.A. DeCandido, John J. Ordover, Terri Osborne and Cory Rushton plus Destiny: Gods of Night by David Mack.

Two more books by David Mack will appear in November and December 2008: Destiny: Mere Mortals and Destiny: Lost Souls.

2009 begins with the January release of Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows. The authors will be: Christopher L. Bennett, Margaret Wander Bonanno, Peter David, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Michael Jan Friedman, Jim Johnson, Rudy Josephs, David Mack, Dave Stern, James Swallow, Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore and Susan Wright. January will also offer: TOS: Errand of Fury: Book 3: Sacrifices of War by Kevin Ryan.

A Singular Destiny, a follow-up novel to David Mack's Destiny Trilogy, will be released in February of 2009. A Singular Destiny is about the political fallout from Destiny's events, and is written along the lines of a Tom Clancy-style political thriller. A Singular Destiny is written by Keith R.A. DeCandido.

March 2009 will see the appearance of TOS: Mere Anarchy by Mike W. Barr, Christopher L. Bennett, Margaret Wander Bonanno, Dave Galanter, Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore and Howard Weinstein. March will also see the release of Titan: Over a Torrent Sea by Christopher L. Bennett. Titan: Over a Torrent Sea picks up where Destiny leaves off.

Voyager: Full Circle by Kirsten Beyer will debut in April of 2009. It will pick up where Star Trek Voyager: Spirit Walk: Book 2 left off and will take Voyager all the way to Destiny and will also set the tone for future post-finale Voyager fiction.

Vanguard: Book 4 by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore is on tap for a May 2009 release.

Ik heb overigens The Lives of Dax gelezen.

The following books will be released in 2009:

January 2009: Three books will be released this month. Singular Destiny, by Keith R.A. DeCandido, will focus on the aftermath of the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy and Federation President Nan Bacco. Errand of Fury 3: Sacrifices of War , by Kevin Ryan, takes place between The Devil in the Dark and Errand of Mercy episodes of the original series. The Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows anthology, with twelve short stories will also appear this month.

February 2009: The fifth Titan book, Titan: Over a Torrent Sea, by Christopher L. Bennett, will appear this month. The Titan series is about Captain Riker and his command, the USS Titan.

March 2009: March will see the release of the Star Trek: Mere Anarchy omnibus. This book contains six previously published eBook novellas, which span a thirty-year timeframe with characters from the original series.

April 2009: Two books will debut in April. Voyager: Full Circle, by Kirsten Beyer, will cover all of Voyager's main characters, and will encompass several different time periods. Voyager: Full Circle will start where the Spirit Walk series left off. The second April 2009 book will be Star Trek: New Frontier: Treason by Peter David. This novel will begin where the last New Frontier book ended and will chronicle the further adventures of Captain Calhoun and the USS Excalibur.

May 2009: Vanguard: Open Secrets, by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, will be released in May. The Vanguard series is set on Starbase 47.

June 2009: Summer begins with the release of Troublesome Minds by Dave Galanter. Troublesome Minds, according to Margaret Clark, is "a classic Trek book focusing on Spock, that is a bit of a return to old-fashioned Star Trek novels."

July 2009: The Next Generation: Losing the Peace, by William Leisner, is another post-Destiny book. In Losing the Peace, Captain Picard will deal with the aftermath of a Borg invasion and try to balance his work with his new family life.

August 2009: Deep Space Nine: The Soul Key, by Olivia Woods, picks up where 2008’s Fearful Symmetry left off and focuses on Kira and the Mirror Universe.

September 2009: Autumn will see Deep Space Nine's The Never-Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack. The Never-Ending Sacrifice looks at the aftermath of the Dominion War and the Cardassians.

October 2009: The Romulan War kicks off in October of 2009 with the release of Enterprise: The Romulan War by Michael A. Martin. Originally planned as a two-book series, Enterprise: The Romulan War will instead be released as a trade paperback. The Romulan War, as seen through the eyes of Captain Jonathan Archer and his Enterprise NX-01 crew, will begin but not be completed, in Enterprise: The Romulan War. According to Margaret Clark, "Because of things that unfolded in 'Kobayashi Maru,' the Vulcans have to come with a horrifying fact and they realize that there is something they have to do. Vulcan is going through upheaval after the rediscovery of Surak's teachings and the society is not as stable as what we see in the 23rd century. T’Pol realizes what their involvement in a war could wrought on Vulcan society and she does something that horrifies her partners in the coalition, but will eventually lead to the foundation of the United Federation of Planets and the Vulcan that we see in the Kirk era."

November 2009: Voyager: Unworthy, by Kirsten Beyer, will show Voyager going out on its new mission. The ship's crew will include: Chakotay, Seven of Nine, Tom Paris and Harry Kim, with Neelix making a cameo appearance. The new Captain of the Voyager, after the apparent demise of Janeway in Before Dishonor (Peter David,) is not revealed, but is not Chakotay. In November, the sixth Titan book, Titan: Synthesis, by James Swallow, will be released.

December 2009: The year wraps up with the fifth Vanguard book. Vanguard: Precipice, by David Mack, is an original series novel.
