Ik heb net seizoen 5 van voyager extras gekeken en daarin zeiden ze dat de Defiant er eerst zoals de Ecquinox uit zou zien en toen ze in voyager de ecquinox gingen gebruiken ze de oude defiant tekeneningen gebruikten.

Nou, dan hebben ze er goed aan gedaan om de Defiant de vorm tegen waarmee ie in DS9 voorkomt.

anders was het misschien ook wel leuk geweest de ecquinox ziet er ook wel vet uit

het was eerst ook de bedoeling de Defiant zwakker te maken en daardoor hadden ze dus dat ontwerp later is pas al die pantsering gekomen

De verklaring volgens Bernd (EAS) en de DS9 Technical Manual:

Fictional design history (facts mostly taken from the DS9 Technical Manual) The Defiant class was originally conceived as a reaction to the Borg threat. The development of the ship started in 2367, just after the disastrous Battle of Wolf 359. An existing spaceframe design with conventional saucer-engineering-nacelle arrangement was the starting point of the Defiant design. This Defiant pathfinder was never built, but the design was modified and eventually used for the Nova class, a planetary research vessel. The Defiant design itself was dramatically changed after it had been decided to compact the ship's structure, abandoning the traditional saucer-engineering hull arrangement and pulling the nacelles directly to the hull. In 2371 the U.S.S. Defiant was in her final year of spaceworthiness testing when she was assigned to DS9 to defend the station against the Dominion. The ship featured a Romulan cloaking device whose use was explicitly restricted to the hostile Gamma Quadrant. While experiences were still being gathered with the prototype vessel, further ships of the Defiant class were built and fought against the Dominion. The U.S.S. Defiant herself kept the NX registry until she was destroyed at the Chin'toka system in 2375
